“The measure of a man is the way he meets the challenge”
Austin T. Moore, MD ,1963
After completing his sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute with Drs. James Andrews and William Clancy, Dr. Holmes returned to his home town of Columbia, SC in 1997 to join the Moore Orthopaedic Clinic.
The Moore Orthopaedic Clinic was founded by Dr. Austin T. Moore in Columbia in 1928. Dr. Moore was a pioneer in the field of orthopedic surgery. During his career he developed hip pins which became the standard for treatment of certain types of hip fractures. In 1940, he collaborated with Dr. Harold Bohlman of Baltimore to develop the first hip prosthesis which was implanted in Columbia, SC. He went on to develop the Austin Moore hip prosthesis for hip fractures which became the first off-the-shelf body part replacement to be available worldwide. Dr. Moore has been called one of the “Giants of Orthopaedic Surgery” and was honored in a 2016 article in Clinical Orthopaedic and Related Research by Dr. Kim Chillag.
Dr. Moore continued to provide excellence in orthopedics as the Moore Clinic grew and his successors have continued to provide exceptional, state-of-the-art care in Columbia,SC to the present day. In 2015, the Dr. Holmes and the physicians of the Moore Clinic merged with Palmetto Health and other local Orthopedic practices and formed Palmetto Health USC Orthopedic Center(PHUSC). PHUSC went on to merge with The Greenville Hospital System to form Prisma Health which is the largest health care provider in the state of South Carolina. Dr. Holmes and his partners at Prisma Health Orthopedics continue the legacy, established by Dr. Austin Moore, in providing excellent orthopedic care to patients from South Carolina and beyond. Dr. Holmes likes to call this merger the “Supernova merger of orthopedic surgery” as it brought together a super-group of over 30 exceptional orthopedic surgeons of all subspecialties, primary care sports physicians, and physiatrists.
